Why do chefs wear white?
The tradition of chefs wearing white uniforms in the kitchen dates back to the mid-1800s. French chef Marie-Antione Careme is thought to have created the style over 200 years ago to signify cleanliness in the kitchen. The idea was this would give the public a positive perception of his chefs. The mess would be easy to spot on white clothing, so, in theory, it would be easy to distinguish a good chef from a bad one depending on how much mess was visible on their workwear. While alterations have been made since the 19th century, many restaurants still use white clothing for the same fundamental reasons.
